Mold Smell

I did an inspection of a home in Santa Rosa yesterday. It seems that the ice maker line to the refrigerator developed a leak. The home owner never noticed any water on the floor because there is tile set directly on the cement slab, which go up to, but not under the kitchen cabinets. This creates a depression under the cabinets. The moisture was flowing under the cabinets and then wicking up into the melamine cabinet material. Needless to say... the cabinets are shot and the granite counter top will have to come out. I took two inside samples; one in the kitchen and one in a non problem area (living room in this case). When I got the lab analysis this morning I almost dropped my coffee... 90,000+ spores of Penicillium/Aspergillus per cubic meter in the  kitchen and 40,000+ spores of Penicillium/Aspergillus per cubic meter in the living room. Outside samples were around 200 and 300 spores per cubic meter (2 samples). Now, I have no doubt that there is mold under the cabinets because I can see it behind the dish washer and in the cabinet base. What amazes me is that there was absolutely no smell. The home was very clean and when I walked in I did not notice any of the usual odors associated with mold growth. Then to find out that the levels of Pen/Asp exceeded 90,000 spores/m3 was just unexpected. Normally the smells associasted with mold growth are due to the presence of microbial volitile organic compounds (mvoc's), apparently, the mold in this house was just not producing any mvoc's. What ever!
