Mold Remediation Costs
Just how much is that mold remediation project going to cost you? That depends entriely on the size and scope of the project, and the contractor you choose for the project. I have blogged about this subject before, but I have had so many questions on my "Contact Us" form that I thought it was worth another blog. Mold remediation is very similar to asbestos abatement; you build a containment to control the spread of airborne particles, then you remove the affected drywall, and then clean it all up. The first two steps are fairly simple, but its the third step that seperates the men from the boys. You are basically cleaning something that is so small (mold spore) that you cant see it without a microscope. This requires special HEPA vacuums and HEPA filtered air movers... these are not cheap to buy and maintain. Mold remediation is a specialty, and not something I would trust a general contractor to do, just as I would not trust them to do asbestos abatement. So, the cost of hiring a mold remediation contractor is generally going to be more expensive than hiring a handyman... but it doesn't have to be much more expensive. The key to controlling costs is to get multiple bids ON THE SAME SCOPE OF WORK! If you have 3 remediation contractors bidding on removing the mold under your kitchen sink you will probably get 3 entirely different numbers because they are not bidding on the same thing. This would be like asking 3 general contractors to bid on building you a house... without any plans. One might bid on a 3 bedroom home, one might bid on a 4 bedroom home, and one might bid on a 5 bedroom home. How can you compare bids unless they all have the same set of plans and are all bidding on the same thing. It is the same with mold remediation... you need to establish what the scope of work is so that they are all bidding apples-to-apples. Thats where I come in. My job is to inspect the project, collect samples, and put together a "protocol" for remediation. All your contractors can then bid on the scope that I have defined. This is VERY important because I am an independent 3rd party with no financial interest in the size of the project.
